Reload the Canons!

This series of articles is an attempt to play through The Canon of videogames: your Metroids, your Marios, your Zeldas, your Pokemons, that kind of thing.

Except I'm not playing the original games. Instead, I'm playing only remakes, remixes, and weird fan projects. This is the canon of games as seen through the eyes of fans, and I'm going to treat fan games as what they are: legitimate works of art in their own right that deserve our analysis and respect.

On Hiatus for NCUR!

Ladies and Gentlemen, I will be in Utah for the rest of the week and therefore will be taking this week off from posting. I'm presenting a paper at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research. The paper is on the application of prosody (the measurement of meter and pattern in poetry) to comics, and how they build and break rhythmic sensations for effect. I don't think I'll be doing a full scale article about it anytime soon (I'm hoping to revise the paper and get it published) but we'll see. In the intervening time, I'll try to reply to some of your comments like I've been meaning to for the past several weeks.

For your amusement while I'm gone, here's a fairly strong list of Things You Ought To Be Reading. I would even consider some of them--Extra Credits and FILM CRIT HULK in particular--to be required reading on the same level as Foucault, Saussure, or McCloud. Have at thee:

FILM CRIT HULK: http://badassdigest.com/author/67
Extra Credits: http://www.penny-arcade.com/patv/show/extra-credits

Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5782108/1/Harry_Potter_and_the_Methods_of_Rationality
Open Culture: http://www.openculture.com/

This should tide you over in my regrettable absence. Enjoy the use of your chair while you can.

Trust me, it won't last.

  1. I am SUPREMELY HAPPY about Foucault and McCloud being referred to on the same playing field in terms of Theory. Epic.

  2. I can only agree on that comment about Extra Credits.

Any chance we'll ever get a peek at that paper?

  3. Dude, that's absolutely fantastic. I'm incredibly happy and proud for y--

--wait, is this the paper you used an example from my comic for? 'Cause if it is, I'm stealing the credit. ALL OF THE CREDIT.
